I cannot believe where all the days are going while we’re heading for Tokyo. Library desk has been out of sight busy with faculty adding more reserves each day and students frantically trying to read materials for pop quizzes. Seems sort of crazy to me. At least it’s not very Prescott College.
I now have an extended family of students…one from Cochella Valley, CA, one from Rochester and I can’t remember where the third is from. We had dinner together tonight and they have tons of energy, are very excited about the voyage, and are planning great independent voyages in Asia for the next few weeks.
I have been sleeping so soundly on this voyage that I need an alarm to wake me every morning to get up to the gym before breakfast. And, besides, we keep retarding the clock and that gives me another hour to sleep! Have seen dolphins, shearwaters, flying fish. The weather has been very warm and humid and occasionally I just sit out on deck and get mesmerized by the ocean waves. Saw a rainbow from dining room window tonight…colors were strong and clear…must be a good omen. They tell me we will be meeting the Siberian currents soon and seas will become rough. When it gets too rough, crew tie up the library shelves and then I don’t know how folks are supposed to use the library.
Tonight is a reception for faculty and staff and tomorrow is a faculty meeting. Dean Soffa now considers me faculty so we’ll see if my relationship with this faculty changes. Had forgotten how hierarchical traditional colleges and universities about rank. It all seems very amusing after working at PC these past few years.
Looking forward to Tokyo and trying to find my way downtown Ginza from the ship. Hope I remember something!
Took a tour of the bridge next day….photos are from the visit. It’s amazing how well the ship steers itself while the captain is tooting around being a manager. Rather like my job as library director at PC!! Learned of a typhoon currently hitting Tokyo which we shall miss.
